In a big support to gig workers, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Saturday announced to arrange identity cards and registration on e-shram portal to assist 1 crore of them.
Sitharaman said, “Social security scheme for welfare of online platform workers gig workers of online platforms provide great dynamism to the new age services economy. Recognising their contribution, our government will arrange for their identity cards and registration on the e-Shram portal. They will be provided healthcare under PM Jan Aarogya Yojana. This measure is likely to assist nearly one crore gig workers,”
Providing social security for gig workers has emerged as a government priority, following multiple surveys that revealed significant gaps in protections for this workforce.
The labour ministry is also engaging with platforms to extend benefits like Ayushman Bharat, accident insurance, and life insurance to gig workers.
Some states have already introduced measures to ensure social security for gig workers. For entities paying gig workers across multiple platforms, the deduction and deposit process is expected to streamline contributions into the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation.
This move reflects the growing importance of safeguarding gig workers in India’s rapidly expanding platform economy.
