Biometric-based Aadhaar authentication will be implemented at 46 GST service centres in Madhya Pradesh to curb fraudulent taxpayers at the initial stages of seeking goods and services tax (GST) registrations.

This initiative aims to streamline the registration process by eliminating deceitful taxpayers, who cause losses to the exchequer.

These centres, to be jointly operated by the state and central GST departments, are anticipated to be operational by the last week of Nov. “To tackle fraudulent registrations and eliminate them from the system at initial stages, sewa kendras are being established in the state. Biometric authentication will be executed at these centres by capturing the photograph of the applicant and physically verifying all original documents. The common modus operandi for registering a fraudulent firm is forging bills and uploading counterfeit documents of people not involved in the business, and through these centres, we will be able to filter out cases at early stages,” said SGST additional commissioner Rajani Singh.

Experts said unscrupulous taxpayers exploit the online system to generate GST registrations and engage in fraudulent transactions, but biometric-based Aadhaar authentication is perceived as maintaining vigilance on such spurious registrations. In MP, of the total five GST service centres will be operated by the CGST at Indore, Ujjain, Bhopal, Jabalpur, and Gwalior, whilst other centres will be managed by SGST.

In Indore, an average of 15 applications for new GST registration is submitted daily. “The system will categorise applications based on historical data, and if there exists any fraudulent registration on the same PAN or any suspicious transactions, it will be flagged off and all such dubious cases will be routed to sewa kendra for authenticating Aadhaar and physically verifying documents like rent agreements and electricity bills by summoning the owner,” said Singh.

In the service centre, appointments will be allocated to the applicant, and biometric authentication will be conducted.
