Breaking: CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline for AY 2025–26

Rate this post

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an important extension for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26. The original deadline of 31st July 2025 has now been extended to 15th September 2025, providing taxpayers with more time to comply with the revised filing requirements.

Why the Extension?

The extension follows structural and content changes in the notified ITR forms for AY 2025–26. These changes are part of CBDT’s ongoing efforts to:

  • Simplify tax compliance
  • Enhance transparency
  • Enable accurate reporting

As a result, more time is needed for system development, integration, and utility testing. Moreover, since TDS statements due by 31st May 2025 will only start reflecting in early June, the original return filing window would have been significantly reduced without this extension.

Impact on Taxpayers

This move is aimed at ensuring:

  • A smoother and more convenient return filing experience
  • Adequate time for stakeholders to comply with the new reporting framework
  • Improved accuracy and integrity in the return filing process

Formal Notification Pending

A formal notification regarding this extension will be issued separately.

Statement from CBDT

According to the press release issued by V. Rajitha, Commissioner of Income Tax (Media & Technical Policy) and Official Spokesperson, the decision reflects the government’s commitment to addressing stakeholder concerns and supporting taxpayers through the transition to the updated ITR formats.
