The Government of India has announced a much-needed extension for filing the GSTR-3B return for October 2024, applicable to registered taxpayers in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The original deadline, 20th November 2024, coincides with the legislative assembly elections in these states. Recognizing the potential challenges for taxpayers in balancing their compliance obligations with their fundamental right to vote, the government, in consultation with the GST Implementation Committee (GIC), has provided an additional day to file the return. The new deadline is now 21st November 2024.
Why the Extension Was Necessary
The simultaneous scheduling of the GSTR-3B filing deadline and the assembly elections posed a unique challenge for taxpayers in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. On 20th November 2024, voters in these states are expected to actively participate in the democratic process. However, the time required for traveling to polling stations and voting could conflict with the time needed to meet tax compliance requirements.
The government has demonstrated its commitment to fostering both tax compliance and civic participation by alleviating this burden. The extension ensures that taxpayers in these states can fulfill their voting responsibilities without undue stress.
