ITR and Audit Date Extension update!

Rate this post

Earlier this year, the Government extended the ITR filing due date for non-audit taxpayers from 31st July to 15th September 2025. This move was intended to provide relief and more time for compliance.

However, the intended relief did not fully materialize. The delayed release of ITR forms and utility tools, coupled with technical glitches and system issues, have significantly reduced the effective window available for taxpayers and professionals to file accurately.

Timeline Recap:

Here’s how the filing schedule unfolded this year:

  • 30 May 2025 – ITR-1 & ITR-4 initial utilities released.
  • 12 June – Common offline utilities for ITR-1 & ITR-4 released.
  • 17 June – ITR-1 & ITR-4 open for filing in online/offline modes.
  • 11 July – All comprehensive ITR forms finally released; real filing season began.
  • Filing milestones:
    • 50 lakh returns by 23 June
    • 1 crore by 7 July
    • 2 crore by 28 July
    • 3 crore by 14 August
    • 4 crore by 30 August
    • 5 Crore by 9 September
  • 3 Crore ITRs are pending to file till date

Despite the extended deadline, taxpayers and professionals effectively had only about two months to file—mirroring the earlier-day rush. Your summary captures this succinctly.

What Professional are saying on X:

Why the Status Quo Warrants an Extension

1. Delayed Form Availability
Key utilities—including ITR-3 and ITR-4—were delayed by around 40 days, significantly trimming accessible compliance time.

2. Portal Glitches & Extra Burden
Ongoing technical issues, heavy traffic, and a surge in error messages have further hampered e-filing. The situation is exacerbated by overlapping regulatory activities and preparations for tax audits.

3. Formal Requests for Relief
Tax professionals and associations—including BJP CA Cell (Pimpri-Chinchwad), BCAS, FKCCI, CAAS, RTCA—have formally approached the Government, urging an additional extension for both ITR filing and tax audit submissions.

4. Current Deadline Still at Risk
Despite mounting pleas, no official announcement has been issued about further extension beyond 15 September. Tax professionals are concerned that more defaults, penalties, and errors may follow if no relief is granted.

Appeal to the Ministry of Finance

Given the compressed timeline, technical barriers, and substantial professional pushback, a further extension for both ITR filing and tax audit reports is not just warranted—it’s essential.

Why it matters:

  • Gives taxpayers and professionals adequate time to ensure accurate and timely filings.
  • Reduces the risk of penalties, interest, and legal errors.
  • Enhances ease of compliance, aligning with digital governance goals.
  • Prevents excessive stress and system overload near the deadline.

The intent behind extending the ITR deadline was noble—but without timely release of tools and a glitch-free portal, the extension has failed to deliver real relief. A further deadline extension would be a prudent step toward ensuring smooth, accurate, and fair compliance for millions.
